Waimanalo Beach: A Serene Escape on Oahu’s Eastern Shore

Waimanalo Beach might be my favorite beach so far! It is close enough to get there in under forty minutes but far enough from the city’s congestion and tourists. Its crystal clear shallow waters meet the soft white sand for miles, making it a perfect beach for families with littles.

The views are breathtaking, and the secluded location with the Ko’olau Mountains in the backdrop makes you feel Hawai’i’s magic with all your senses.

Waimanalo Beach is located on the eastern windward side of Oahu, and the drive from Honolulu on the H1 doesn’t disappoint, with stunning views along the coast. Along the way, you pass Hanuma Bay (well known for snorkeling), Koko Crater Botanical Garden, Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail, Kaiwi State Scenic Spot, and Sea Life Park Aquarium. There’s plenty to do and see before sunbathing underneath an Ironwood tree.

The best time to go is in the morning when the waters are calmer, right before the wind kicks up in the mid-afternoon. It is also the warmest. As the sun continues its path westbound, it tends to be blocked by the breathtaking Ko’olau mountains, making the breeze feel a bit cooler.

The best day of the week to go is usually any weekday. That is when you will find the beach mostly secluded since it is locals-favorite on the weekends. There aren’t any convenient food options like at Ala Moana Beach or Waikiki Beach, so plan to bring snacks and drinks.

As always, a friendly reminder: whenever you visit one of Mother Nature’s refugees, leave it better than you found it 🌺 💞.

Happy Sunbathing!
